Frequently Asked Questions
What communities are served by the Caribbean Community Foundation?
Nongovernmental organizations registered in the nations of the Caribbean, Central America, and the Bahamas.
Aren’t foundations only for wealthy donors?
No, the Caribbean Community Foundation accepts contributions of all sizes. Your resources can be combined with those of others who share your interests to provide maximum impact at a minimum administrative cost.
Are there tax advantages of a community foundation over a private or family foundation?
Community foundations combine the tax advantages of a public charity with the lasting quality of a private foundation. Gifts of cash and ordinary income property to a community foundation are deductible up to 50% of adjusted gross income, compared with 30% for a private foundation. Gifts of appreciated property can be credited for 30% rather than 20%. Community foundations do not have the excise tax and payout requirements of private foundations. Perhaps the most important quality is the flexibility in design for anticipating future needs.
Where does the CCF get its funds?
The Caribbean Community Foundation receives its money from individuals, families, organizations, or corporations. These gifts, bequests and income from corporate contracts make grants that serve a community.
What is an endowment?
The commonly accepted meaning for endowment is a fund that is kept in perpetuity (not spent) to provide interest and dividend earnings for the benefit of a charitable cause.
What kind of gifts does the CCF accept?
A donor may make a gift or bequest of any size to the foundation, including cash, stocks and bonds, real estate, insurance, and other marketable assets. (See also Ways to Give.) Many donors provide undesignated gifts for the CCF’s Endowment Fund and Unrestricted Fund, which respond to community needs as they arise. Other donors nominate a specific organization or area of concern subject to CCF analysis review and Board approval.
Will having an endowment conflict with a donor’s current giving?
Absolutely not. In fact, experience demonstrates that dedicated donors do not choose among ways to support their favorite charities, but frequently participate in all of them.
